Larry's Giant Subs

Larry's Giant Subs was a sub shop that started back in 1982 in Jacksonville, Florida and has now grown into a national franchise. The only one in Orlando is in the Hunter's Creek area and within walking distance of my job. However this is the first time I have actually gone in and it was because I was craving a Greek salad. The shop is right next to Tijuana Flats, so I could never get myself to walk pass up that yummy tex-mex. The subs at Larry's looked just as yummy though, so I will need to go back and try one. The salad was fresh and tasty, but I had two problems with it; I didn't like the shredded lettuce for a Greek salad and the way everything was compartmentalized instead of layered. I'm not sure if you can tell from the picture, but it was tomatoes over here, olives over there, etc...

Here's what they say, "Their first subs were designed using the best quality meats and cheeses available and topped off with produce that is delivered daily; like iceberg lettuce, vine ripe tomatoes and the finest Spanish onions". Fitting to their name and their slogan, "Home of the Big One", they have 6 foot and 3 foot subs that they make for catering. But, unless you really are King Kong (part of their theme); you probably are going with the 6 inch or 12 inch sub. Their bread comes straight from the Costanzo’s Bakery in the heart of Buffalo, New York. They also feature real New York cheesecake direct from Carnegie’s Deli in Manhattan, use only Chicken of the Sea Albacore Tuna and Hellman’s Real Mayonnaise in their Tuna Salad, and their Chicken Salad is made by Sally Sherman’s. They also have a nice selection of soups by the famous Soup Man.

Get FRESH with your Valentine

"GET FRESH WITH YOUR VALENTINE IN AN INTERACTIVE AND EDIBLE FANTASY WORLD"

Orlando's own multi-talented performance group DRIP is creating the magic again with their culinary performance art event FRESH at The Cameo Theatre February 4-6 and February 11-14.  You may recall a post I did after seeing their amazing show at Blank Space.  This one sounds like it will be even more of a total sensory experience!

Upon entering Fresh, couples will experience a Willy Wonka-like edible fantasy world where they watch dancers perform with food, stroll through an art and candy market, indulge in a four-course, hands-on dinner and have the option of participating in a candlelit couples-only body paint workshop, leaving hand-in-hand with their finished piece of art.
Additional Fresh experience highlights include:

A white winter garden with a champagne wishing well, guitar luge and accompanying dance performance in a water box.

Bohemian art and candy market featuring local visual artists and old fashion candy and treats.

Complimentary massage and henna art.

Fantastical tree canopy with appetizer vines hanging from the ceiling, an oil and vinegar pond and a colorful cupcake field.

Aerial waterfall cube dance performance.

Messy, colorful and unique performances with food throughout the venue including an earthy dance performance in a large coffee mound, fantastical fruits and juices raining on dancers and the surrounding garden, a 10-foot waterfall and a screen-printing performance with edible inks.

A performance score composed by David Traver, the music director for Blue Man Group Orlando.

Kahuna Grill Orlando

I had my first visit to Kahuna Grill Orlando the other night.  Wings, Ribs, Flatbreads, Burgers, Steaks, Seared Tuna, Asian Nachos, Kalua Pork Quesadillas and more, all in a Hawaiian inspired setting.  Sounds interesting doesn't it?  I have driven by this place for a long time and was curious about it, and I finally went to check it out.  I expected it to be a Hawaiian style restaurant with maybe a little bit of a bar feel to it, but what it ended up feeling like to me was a big tikki bar.  Granted it was ladies night and around 10:30 when I arrived, so you had more of bar crowd there.

The place was packed after a bit and had a dance floor, electronic darts, pool table, DJ, outdoor seating and two bars.  After a few drinks my friends and I decided to give the food a try, which I guess you could call American/Asian/Hawaiian fusion.  For me the food was not worth the wait, since the only server was also the bartender and we were not sitting at the bar.  I had the Asian Nachos- Crispy fried won tons with baby shrimp, mozzarella cheese, picode gallo, Thai peanut sauce, plum chili sauce and garnishes.  My friends had the Chicken Quesadillas and the Fried Mozzarella which are self explanatory and were nothing out of the ordinary.  For a little desert we had the Island Fondue- Warm chocolate that says served in coconut shell but it wasn't and it had fruit and marshmallows for dipping.  All the food was mediocre, so it leaves me to wonder if it's just as lame during the day or if it was because it was so late.

To sum it up, there was nothing that left me with a desire to go back.  It seems like a good concept, which is just not well executed.  If you have been during the day, let me know what you thought.  Here is the menu.
